PROTOCOL OVERVIEW

BREATHmg PROTOCOL OVERVIEW A structured breathing framework for autonomic regulation and performance - Version 1.0, 2026

ABSTRACT

BREATHmg is a structured, 60-day breathwork training system developed to provide practitioners with a systematic, dose-based approach to respiratory regulation. The protocol organizes breathing patterns into a gear-based framework, mapping specific techniques to distinct physiological and cognitive states. The system draws from established principles in respiratory physiology, autonomic neuroscience, and behavioral performance training, and is designed for independent use without requiring prior breathwork experience or ongoing professional supervision.

BACKGROUND AND DEVELOPMENT

BREATHmg was developed by Jigme Glenn, a Southern California based Tibetan-American Product Designer and long-term breathwork practitioner. The protocol emerged from nearly a decade of personal practice and the observation that existing breathwork resources suffered from one of two common failures: excessive mystification or insufficient structure. Neither approach served practitioners, particularly new ones, seeking measurable, repeatable outcomes.

The framework was developed to address this gap - creating a system that is empirically grounded, aesthetically minimal, and practically deployable across a wide range of use cases, from individual performance optimization to organizational wellness programming.

THE DOSING FRAMEWORK

The name BREATHmg applies a pharmaceutical dosing metaphor to breathing practice. In this framework, one minute of intentional breathwork is defined as one milligram (1mg) of respiratory input. This convention serves two purposes: it quantifies practice duration in a concrete, memorable unit, and it frames breathwork as a precise intervention rather than an ambient wellness activity.

"One minute of intentional breathwork = 1mg of respiratory input. Dosage is trackable, adjustable, and cumulative."

Daily sessions range from 8 to 28 minutes, accumulating toward a recommended baseline of 40mg and 360 conscious breaths per day at the culmination of the program. The 60-day program is structured to build tolerance, expand range, and develop the practitioner's ability to deploy specific gears on demand.

THE GEAR SYSTEM

The core organizing principle of BREATHmg is the gear system - a set of named breathing states that correspond to distinct physiological and cognitive profiles. Each gear is defined by a specific combination of breath rate, pacing, and mechanical pattern. Practitioners learn to shift between gears deliberately, developing on-demand control over autonomic state.

The program uses three primary gears and two auxiliary patterns:

GEAR

PACING

STATE

PRIMARY APPLICATION

Baseline

3s in / 3s out

Parasympathetic stabilization

Grounding, recovery, session start, stress reset

Upshift

2s in / 2s out

Calm alertness

Focus work, task transitions, afternoon energy

Overdrive

1s in / 1s out

Sympathetic activation

Rapid energy, breaking inertia, momentum

Two auxiliary patterns are used for targeted effects outside the core daily stacks:

PATTERN

PACING

STATE

PRIMARY APPLICATION

Downshift

4s in / 4s out (nose only)

Deep parasympathetic

High stress, anxiety, pre-sleep

Turbo

1s in / 1s out (mouth only)

Sharp cognitive activation

Cognitive fog, pre-task clarity

Baseline functions as the default gear and the system's primary reset. All sessions begin and end with Baseline. The higher-energy gears are used progressively within each daily stack, and practitioners return to Baseline between rounds to stabilize before advancing.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The BREATHmg 60-day program is delivered as a self-directed digital package. The program includes 17 guided audio sessions produced with professional voice synthesis, a 50-page practitioner manual covering the theoretical framework and session-by-session guidance, and daily tracking tools for monitoring practice consistency and subjective outcomes.

The program is structured in three phases:

Days 1-20 / Calibration. Introduction to the gear system, breath awareness training, and establishing baseline practice consistency.

Days 21-45 / Range Building. Progressive expansion across gears, introduction of more demanding breath ratios, and application to specific use cases.

Days 46-60 / Integration. Independent deployment of gears across daily contexts, reduced guided instruction, and development of autonomous practice.

INTENDED APPLICATIONS

BREATHmg is designed for application across a range of individual and organizational contexts. Primary use cases include:

  • Individual performance optimization (cognitive, athletic, creative
  • Stress and anxiety management without clinical intervention
  • Sleep quality improvement
  • Workplace wellness and executive performance programs
  • Recovery support in substance use and behavioral health settings
  • Veteran and first responder autonomic regulation programs
  • Educational and institutional wellness initiatives

The protocol does not require prior breathwork experience and makes no clinical health claims. It is not a medical intervention and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. Practitioners with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should consult a physician before beginning.

ORGANIZATIONAL ACCESS

BREATHmg is available to qualifying nonprofit organizations, community health programs, veteran service organizations, and educational institutions through a complimentary partnership program. Interested organizations are invited to contact the BREATHmg team directly to discuss implementation.
